Sector Background:

During the last years, The Egyptian Building Materials and Construction sector witnessed a remarkable boom with an average growth rate of 20% together with a general improvement of quality. It continues to be (relatively) one of the most dynamic sectors of Egypt’s economy. It accounts for about 8% of total Egyptian employment.

It contributed about 7% to the GDP in 2004-2005 and is expected to account for 4.8% during the 5th five-year plan. In addition, there are linkages to around 50 different industries that are highly dependant on the real estate and construction sectors.

2008 Data:

  • Value of exports grows from 24.5 billion EGP in year 2007 to 24.9 for year 2008 with a growth rate of 1%

  • The main markets for the sector were Italy with a growth rate of 16% in year 2008, Spain with 9% and KSA with 7.8%

  • Total companies registered at IMC are 881, with total employment of 59000 employees

  • Total investment of these companies is 31 billion EGP with a growth rate of 15%

  • Developing a study for mapping of all existing Quarries
  • Develop and implement a construction management system
  • Evaluation of the different quarry raw materials of the construction industry
