Energy in Egypt
The current national energy supply mix in Egypt is:
• 95% from fossil fuel (petroleum products and natural gas)
• 5% from renewable resources (mainly hydro and limited wind)
The electricity generation activity utilizes around 30% of the fossil fuel and natural gas
resources in addition to all the hydro and wind energies resources. The industrial
activities in Egypt consume around 40% of the overall all energy available. The average
annual gross for energy use was around 6% over the last decade and it is expected to
continue with the current improvements in the national GDP A large number of studies,
national and international, showed that it is quite possible to limit the increase in energy
use without negative effects on the different production activities, as shown in the figure
below.

The Energy Efficiency and Environment Protection Programme
This programme aims at reducing the specific energy consumption per unit product without any
negative impact on the product quality or quantity, as well as limiting polluting emissions. To do
so; IMC provides both technical and financial support to the industrial establishments through:
* - Performance of preliminary energy audits to identify:
- Energy Saving potential through a number of proposed energy saving technology
applications
- Technical and financial feasibility related to the proposed energy saving application,
which include:
- Amount of energy saving and associated financial savings
- Estimated required investment
- Estimated payback period and return on investment
- Estimated amounts of pollutant reductions associated with the estimated energy savings
*- Provide support to identify and activate proper financing procedures to implement the recommended energy saving applications; either through IMC and/or other means such
as Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) or others.
*- IMC provides up to 15% of the energy efficiency application investment and with a ceiling
of 150 thousand EGP
*- Help to identify potential joint venture activities between national and international industries for the product
ion of equipment with low specific energy consumption |

This is why the Government of Egypt (GOE) did set a strategy to implement a number
of polices up to year 2022 to limit the energy needs and diversify the energy resources
without hindering the development plans.
Among these polices are:
-
Adopt an energy efficiency plan leading to the reduction of energy use through
energy efficiency implementations by 8.3% by the year 2022.
- Achieve an electricity generation mix composed of 20% renewable energies, by year
2022.
In view of all the aforementioned, the Industrial Modernization Centre (IMC) did set
a program by the end of year 2007 for industrial establishments to:
- Improve on the efficiency of energy use at the industrial establishments
- The use of renewable energies as a source of energy needs
- Encourage industries related to the manufacturing of equipment associated with
the efficient use of energy as well as renewable energies
This is partially to feed in the general goal of IMC for providing the Egyptian industries
with tools for industrial improvement and better competition edge. |

| The Renewable Energy and Environment Protection Programme |
This programme aims at encouraging industries dealing with the manufacturing of equipment
related to the production of renewable energies; in addition to help in facilitating the energy
production from renewable energies and its use. This is to reduce the dependency on the
use of fossil fuel as a main source for energy as well as limiting polluting emissions. To do
so; IMC provides both technical and financial support to the industrial establishments through:
- Provide renewable energies information related to its availability and use in Egypt,
both current and estimates for the future.
- Provide and facilitate available information at IMC related to the feasibility of producing
energy from renewable energy resources.
- Conduct feasibility studies related to the different renewable energy resources, which
include:
• Technical capabilities (technology, qualified human resources, locations/sitting)
• Estimated pollutant reductions associated with renewable energy applications as
compared to providing the energy from fossil fuel resources
• Investment needs and associated Operation and Maintenance (O&M) for renewable
energies applications
• Financial saving associated with renewable energies applications
- St imulating, proposing and participating in discussions related to existing and proposed
procedures and logistics aiming at the production of energy from renewable sources and its dealings
- Provide technical assistance to potential energy service providers from renewable
energies to get the needed licenses to practice; in accordance with the market rules for electricity in Egypt
- IMC provides up to 20% of investment for renewable energy use applications with
a ceiling of 200 thousnd EGP
