Green Economy Program

Green Economy Program

the significance of the green economy program rests on Egypt's commitment to participate in international efforts to enhance the efficiency of resource use, reduce carbon emissions and waste, and reduce pollution and the degradation of the ecosystem. It seeks to achieve integration between the four dimensions of sustainable development, namely; economic, environmental, social and technical dimensions. The government of Egypt adopted a long-term plan for wind energy and set a goal for meeting 20% of the electrical needs from renewable energy sources by 2020. Wind energy covers 12% of those needs. In 2010, Egypt received $ 1.3 billion to invest in developing clean energy through projects related to solar, thermal and wind energy. Egypt's green economy strategy aims to expand the range of targets set for specific sectors, including the energy sector, and the latest report issued by the Egyptian National Competitiveness Council focuses on strategies, investments and public policies that can drive the green economic transformation path.

Program Goals

  • Achieving tangible economic growth, and ensuring and deepening the concept of green economy
  • Ongoing improvement of resource efficiency, environmental impacts and social dimensions
  • Raising awareness on cost reduction, as well as utilizing competitive advantages arising from relying on an environmentally sustainable approach

I Energy services

Improving usage and consumption of energy

This service helps beneficiary industrial facilities improve electrical and thermal energy usage and consumption to achieve the following goals:

  • Improving efficiency of thermal processes
  • Efficiently reducing losses due to unused energy
  • Extending the service life of electrical equipment and raising the efficiency of equipment performance through optimal operation policies

Improving usage and consumption of energy

This service aims to help companies improve their capacities through a detailed review for energy uses and applications by an experienced consulting firm, in such a way to:

  • Energy usage efficiency
  • Applying energy management systems
  • Reducing costs

Energy Saving Review

The energy saving review service is the first step that must be taken when considering the possibility of implementing energy conservation programs. It is like a preliminary survey through which initial recommendations are made of potential energy conservation opportunities and technical and financial feasibility, as well as through which the main systems and equipment needed by programs are identified. It also helps implement and develop a future action plan for energy saving opportunities in the entity involved in the survey. Through this service, a brief description of each process or activity that consumes energy within the industrial facility can be provided, and notes about the periodic energy consumption levels and current energy efficiency activities.

Implementing an energy management system in accordance with the requirements of ISO 50001 of 2018

The service aims to provide technical support in the field of preparation for ISO 50001: 2018, which enables the company to obtain certification. The company must follow a systematic approach in achieving continuous improvement of energy performance, including energy efficiency, energy use and the overall performance of the company's consumption, personnel competency and preparation of the Energy Management Policy Manual.

Assessment and ISO 50001 certifications

The service aims to conducting necessary reviews for granting the ISO 50001 certification for beneficiary companies as well as actual certification.

II Environment-specific services

Environmental survey service

The environmental survey service is the first step towards placing any industrial facility in the list of environmentally friendly establishments, starting from conducting the initial survey of the facility in terms of its environmental impact on workers and the surrounding community, to determining the consumed resources and potential opportunities for cleaner production, then submitting a preliminary report that includes an inventory of all inputs and outputs and diagnosing causes and problems, environmental policy recommendations report, and a list of cleaner production opportunities

Application of an environmental management system as per ISO 14001:2015

It aims at developing and modernizing the beneficiary company system to obtain ISO 14001:2015.

ISO 14001:2015 certifications

The service aims to conducting necessary reviews for granting the ISO 14001 certification for beneficiary companies as well as actual certification.

ISO 14001:2015 certificate review for first and second years

The service aims to regularly review (first and second years) for the ISO 14001:2015 as well as certificate renewal in case of passing necessary reviews.

Water usage rationalization

The service aims to help beneficiary companies review water consumption and designing an efficient plan for water conservation, as well as for sewage water management.

Key projects of the Green Economy Program

I EGYPT-PV small grid-connected photovoltaic systems project

The Egypt-PV solar cell systems project is implemented by IMC in partnership with the United Nations Development Program and funded by the Global Environment Facility, and which won the British Energy Institute award as the best projects presented globally to reduce greenhouse gases for the year 2010. The project was chosen among more than 120 projects applied for the award out 29 countries.

Project Goals

The solar cell systems project aims to support the spread of use of small solar cells, especially the decentralized generation stations that are installed in industrial, commercial and tourism facilities, residential buildings and public facilities, which resulted in providing technical and financial support for the implementation of 121 power stations in the industrial, commercial, and tourism sectors, residential, public buildings in 15 governorates, with a total capacity of 9.8 megawatts. This is in addition to establishing centers to provide support and technical advice, with a focus on increasing the percentage of the local manufacturing component, qualifying technical personnel and supporting emerging markets for this technology in Egypt, which contributes to providing New job opportunities in this field.

Project achievements

  • Installation of 115 models for solar power plants in the industrial, commercial, tourism, residential, and public buildings.
  • Working in 15 governorates with a total capacity of 9.8 MGW, and energy saving by 13 GWH/year.

Expected outcomes

  • Reducing CO2 emissions by 7.9 KT, with the aim to reach 129 KT by 2034
  • Reducing costs of establishing solar plants by 18%
  • Implementation of training programs to increase awareness of solar power plant technologies for 201 trainees from different backgrounds (engineers - students - journalists - banking and finance sector), 60% of the trainees are women
  • Developing a solar energy road map at the New Administrative Capital till 2030
